In response to two fatal shark attacks last year, the Western Cape coastline at Plettenberg Bay has deployed shark spotters to enhance safety for beachgoers. The presence of great white sharks off the beaches in South Africa's coastal city of Cape Town, after an absence of over four years, has heightened concern.

South Africa is globally recognized for its abundance of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias). The country's waters are home to approximately one-quarter of the world's 1,000 known shark and ray species, making it one of the largest populations of great white sharks.

Conservation Concerns

However, this rich marine ecosystem faces conservation challenges. Globally, nearly one-quarter of all known shark and ray species are classified as threatened with extinction. In South African waters alone, 98 shark species reside, attracting shark diving enthusiasts worldwide.
