Bangladesh defeat India by 188 runs in 2nd Test, level series
Rishabh Pant drops crucial catch, Bangladesh capitalise
Bangladesh pulled off a stunning 188-run victory over India in the second Test in Dhaka on Sunday, levelling the two-match series 1-1.
Rishabh Pant was at the centre of the drama, dropping a crucial catch of Najmul Hossain Shanto on 18 that proved costly as the Bangladesh opener went on to make a match-winning 224.
Pant's error allowed Bangladesh to post a mammoth 513 in their first innings, giving them a 84-run lead over India's 429.
India collapse in second innings
In reply, India collapsed to 162 all out in their second innings, with only Ravichandran Ashwin (42) and Shreyas Iyer (29) offering any resistance.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the star for Bangladesh with the ball, taking 5-63, while Khaled Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan also chipped in with two wickets each.
Bangladesh's historic win
The victory is Bangladesh's first-ever Test win over India and only their second victory in the format against a top-five ranked team.
It is also a major boost for Bangladesh's hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship final, while India's chances of reaching the showpiece event have been dented.
What went wrong for India?
India's defeat was largely due to their poor fielding, with Pant's dropped catch of Shanto the most glaring error.
The tourists also struggled to contain Bangladesh's spinners, with Mehidy and Shakib proving particularly difficult to handle.
In addition, India's batsmen were unable to cope with the pressure of chasing a big target on a turning pitch.
What next for India?
India will now have to regroup ahead of the third and final Test against Bangladesh, which starts on December 22 in Chittagong.
The tourists will need to improve their fielding and batting if they are to avoid a series defeat and maintain their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final.
